 Named after the famous physician of classical times, Galen Insurance Company was formed in 2005 by a group of Missouri physicians who felt that their interests, and the interests of other medical professionals, would be better served by a physician-owned, locally-focused, professional liability company. Various ways of organizing the new company were examined, and the conclusion was that a fully-capitalized insurance company, supported by reinsurance, was the model most suited for price stability and strength over the long term.
Galen is a selective company and has plans to operate only in Missouri for the next few years. Primary care practitioners and practitioners in most medical specialties are eligible for insurance. There are cost differentials based upon the doctor’s specialty, location, and his or her years of experience.
Galen does not insure against non-medical risks such as property damage or premises liability. This means that natural disasters like hurricanes will not affect Galen’s prices as they might a multi-line, multi-state company. Galen sets its premiums so they are appropriate for the risks it assumes, and will not be able to seek additional payments from its insureds through membership assessments.
